BUSINESS

1. Asian Stocks Decline Amid Growth and Tariff Concerns

Asian stock markets fell on Friday, ending the week on a downbeat note due to heightened geopolitical worries and concerns over impending U.S. tariffs. These factors diminished investor risk appetite and kept safe-haven gold near record highs. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong dropped over 2%, while Japan's Nikkei saw a modest rise. Investors are anticipating more details on the upcoming U.S. tariffs and their potential impact.

2. European Nations Plan Increased Defense Spending Amid U.S. Trade Tensions

European countries are formulating plans to replace the U.S. within NATO if necessary, by significantly increasing their military investments over the next five to ten years. This move comes as the U.S. administration under President Trump threatens to impose tariffs on European imports, leading to heightened economic and political uncertainties.

3. U.S. Dollar Strengthens Following Federal Reserve's Steady Rate Decision

The U.S. dollar strengthened against major currencies after the Federal Reserve indicated no immediate plans to cut interest rates. The dollar index rose 0.36% to 103.81. This development comes amid concerns over the potential economic impacts of U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive global trade tariffs.

4. OECD Reports Softening Global Growth Prospects

The OECD's March 2025 Economic Outlook indicates that while global economic growth remained resilient in 2024, recent indicators suggest softening growth prospects. This is attributed to increased economic policy uncertainty and the imposition of new trade barriers by several countries. Global growth is expected to moderate over the coming two years, with inflation remaining above target in many economies.

5. U.S. Trade Policies Lead to Market Volatility

The U.S. administration's recent announcements of tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union have led to significant declines in U.S. stock markets. The S&P 500 index fell by 1.8%, while the Nasdaq-100 index dropped by 2.6%. Investors are concerned that these tariffs could create inflation by increasing manufacturing costs and consumer prices, leading to market volatility.

AI-Powered Traffic Enforcement in the UK

The UK has implemented AI-powered cameras to enhance traffic law enforcement. These cameras not only monitor speeding but also detect mobile phone use and seatbelt violations. Since their pilot launch in 2021, they have identified over 2,300 offenders and contributed to a 14% increase in speeding fines over three years, with 3.3 million fines issued last year. While some view this technology as a privacy intrusion, others acknowledge its potential to improve road safety.

Nvidia's Blackwell Ultra Chips Unveiled

At the GTC 2025 conference, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang introduced the Blackwell Ultra computer chips, designed to meet the increasing demand for advanced AI computational power. Huang noted that the need for computational capability has surged 100-fold due to advancements in agentic AI and reasoning models. Despite the optimistic presentation, Nvidia's stock experienced a decline, reflecting investor concerns over the necessity of these chips for AI development. Huang also announced plans for the future release of the Vera Rubin chips, expected to offer even faster processing speeds by late 2026.
